In sales, the number one rule is to NOT alienate your customers. Why then do advertisers routinely insult men?

I understand that women purchase more consumer goods, but why would advertisers sacrifice sales by insulting men as a matter of routine? Is our money not green? Are they hoping we won’t care?
What is it, exactly?

Is sexuality pretty much the only card the media plays when advertising using women?
